Treo Video Used to Break N.Y. Plane Crash News

Fox News reporter Scott Wilder used his Treo 700 (Verizon or Sprint not specified) and CometVision video recording software to film the initial footage of a plane crash that happened on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, this is the first application of a TV network using video captured on a mobile phone for live coverage. The Treo was connected to a video camera, which enabled the live coverage. Normally the footage is recorded and then edited, but this is the first application of that technology in a live setting.

Eyes on CometVision

CometVision is employed as a multimedia-management solution where the footage can be taken at the push of a button and then emailed/posted using the cellular wireless connection (EDGE, EV-DO, etc.). However, because the video is tied to the available bandwidth, the quality of the recording can be affected by high cellular network activity.

As smartphones become more entrenched into the lives of consumers and professions, applications such as CometVision will enable all to take commonly used processes such as recoding footage and making it available to others much easier. In this application, higher resolution video and faster network connections would make the difference between grainy and flawless footage.
