Companies Pushing the Limits in Mobile Technologies

Recently, two companies have announced that they have made significant improvements in technologies that can be used in future mobile devices.

Faster HSDPA

Cingular Wireless has revealed that will start offering 7.2 Mbps HSDPA service next month. This is roughly twice the cellular-wireless networking speed currently available from this carrier, and much faster than anything available from its competitors.

Naturally, though, Cingular customers will see the fastest data transfer speeds only under ideal conditions.

Although there are handhelds and smartphones with HSDPA support available now, these will not be able to take advantage of this speed boost. Initially, the only devices that will be able to do so will be computers with a PC card.

100 GB Microdrive

Toshiba has announced a 1.8-inch drive that can store 100 gigabytes of data, the largest capacity yet achieved in a microdrive.

The new drive uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and an improved error correction code to secure the highest areal density of any 1.8-inch hard drive in the market, 155.3 gigabits per square inch.

Toshiba will start mass production of this microdrive in January.
