Possible First Glimpse of the HTC Star Trek Replacement

The vast majority of Windows Mobile Smartphones have a tablet shape, but HTC makes one that stands out from the crowd. This model, code-named Star Trek, uses a clamshell design, but still manages to be slim enough to invite comparison to the very popular Motorola RAZR.

This smartphone is currently being offered by several companies under different names, including the Cingular 3125 and the i-mate SmartFlip.

Recently, a web site based in Russia, hpc.ru, claims to have obtained a copy of HTC's product roadmap for 2007. Listed on this is a device that appears to be the replacement for the Star Trek.

This model, whose code-name is currently unknown, will apparently have a great deal in common with its predecessor, including, of course, a clamshell design. It will also have both an standard internal display and a smaller external one for displaying phone information.

This upcoming HTC smartphone will also supposedly include exterior buttons for controlling the Windows media Player, as the Star Trek does.

Essentially the only hard detail hpc.ru has on this model is that it, unlike its predecessor, will have built-in GPS capabilities.

Speculation

The casing around this device appears thicker than the rest, leading to the possibility that this device will have a higher-reslution camera than the current one. It also apears to have a flash.

The fastest cellular-wireless networking standard supported by the Star Trek is EDGE, and its possible its replacement will have UMTS/HSDPA.

Dependind on when the upcomming model is released, it may run the next version of Windows Mobile, code-named Crossbow. This is rumored to include a WM Smartphone version of Office Mobile.
