A Glimpse of Two New Smartphones in the Motorola Q Series

There's no doubt that there will be a follow-up to the popular Motorola Q; in fact there are going to be two of them. The company has pre-announced the Motorola Q EDGE and the Motorola Q2.

At this point, not much is known about these two models, but a few details are available.

Motorola Q EDGE

The only version of the original Q runs on CDMA networks. The Motorola Q EDGE will be a GSM device with, obviously, support for the 2.5G networking standard EDGE.

Based on the picture of the device Motorola has released, it appears that this upcoming model will be essentially physically identical to its predecessor.

Motorola Q2

The Q2 is expected to be a much more significantly changed from the current one.

Motorola has said there will be be both GSM and CDMA versions of this smartphone, and these will support HSDPA or EV-DO, respectively.

And, based on a picture that was leaked on HowardForums, the Q2 will apparently have the same basic shape as the original, but its design will undergo some changes. The keyboard will be curved, for example, and significantly larger. The oval D-pad will also supposedly be changed to a circle.

What We Don't Know

While its a safe assumption both these upcoming models will run Windows Mobile for Smartphone, it isn't known what version.

Microsoft is going to release an updated version of this operating system -- code-named Crossbow -- in the second half of this year. It's possible one of both of these smartphone will use it.

Also unknown are other important details, like processor speed, memory, and battery capacity.

Coming When?

Although Motorola is willing to admit the Q EDGE and Q2 are coming up, it won't say when. The company also isn't willing to talk about which wireless carriers in which countries will be offering these smartphones.

Their official announcement will be next month, at the 3GSM conference.
