Nokia has introduced a new Feature Pack for S60-based smartphones. The latest version of this mobile operating system was primarily created for mid-range devices, and this latest update offers numerous usability enhancements
Feature Pack 2 include improvements in S60's messaging, multitasking, and downloading functions.
For example, it enables immediate playback of multimedia files during downloading, as well as animated notification of inbound calls.
Back-end improvements focus on improving performance and flexibility of S60-based smartphones in various hardware configurations.
Good News for Developers
Nokia believes that the development of applications and services for S60 devices should be faster with this update.
Feature Pack 2 brings a major extension to the C++ development environment with Open C. This brings the familiar standard C function libraries to S60 software.
As Nokia said in its release, "With Open C, developers can reuse existing code and focus on the mobility aspects of their applications."
Coming Next Quarter
Nokia's Feature Pack 2 will be available for all S60 device manufacturers during the second quarter of this year.
It will be fully compatible with S60 Third Edition, and applications developed for the S60 Edition will run on all Feature Pack 2 devices.
