A few days ago, a high-level executive at Google said that her company has a mobile phone in development. Yesterday, though, a different executive at this company said that Google isn't planning in any such thing.
Speaking at a conference in Australia, Richard Kimber, Google's South-East Asia managing director of sales and operations, said that his company is not interested in entering the cut-throat, often low-margin, mobile phone business.
"At this point in time, we are very focused on the software, not the phone," said Kimble, according to the The Australian Financial Review.
He did not comment on the remarks made earlier by Isabel Aguilera, Google's Managing Director in Spain and Portugal, that revealed that Google engineers are in the process of creating a phone that can access its mobile services, such as its search engine, gMail, and Google Maps.
Maybe, Maybe Not
Despite Kimber's assertion that a gPhone is not in development, rumors to the contrary persist.
For example, the Guardian Unlimited reports that this company has been talking to several European wireless carriers about offering a Google-branded phone.
It supposedly has even talked to Telefónica, owner of the European carrier O2, about developing this device.
