Motorola has signed an agreement that could lead to it releasing products that include what is being called a pico projector -- a device that can be built into a phone that projects a larger virtual screen than can fit in a pocket-size unit.
It will be working with Microvision on this company's ultra-miniature laser-based display engine, called PicoP.
The two hope to eventually give users the ability to project content from a mobile device onto a wall, object, or even a curved surface. This will allow people to more easily share presentations, web sites, images, or videos with friends or business colleagues.
"With its slim form factor and low power requirements, Microvision's PicoP projector is optimized for the mobile environment," stated Alexander Tokman, President and CEO of Microvision. "We believe that our unique display technology, combined with Motorola's focus on delivering cool experiences, would allow mobile users to enhance their viewing of information and entertainment."
In the Prototype Stage
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed; however, the companies revealed they will work together initially to integrate Microvision's latest PicoP projector inside a functioning mobile device for demonstration purposes.
This prototype handset will use Microvision's new, WVGA (854 by 480 color pixels) wide angle projector.
More information about PicoP can be found on Microvision's web site.
