New Version of Opera for Windows Mobile Released as Beta

Opera Software has released a public beta of the next version of its web browser for Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones.

Possibly the biggest change is that the Pocket PC version now supports Macromedia Flash Player 7. Other changes in both versions include:

• Web search in address bar
• Save image
• Import IE bookmarks

Opera 8.65 Beta runs on Windows Mobile 2003 and above. It is available for free, but it expires on June 1.

Intel Expected to Announce New Processors for UMPCs

Even though Intel helped Microsoft launch the Ultra Mobile PC class of devices, some makers of UMPCs are basing their models on lower-power chips from one of Intel's competitors.

In response, Intel is reportedly going to announce a new processor for UMPCs at its Developer Forum later this month.

Code-named Stealey, the new processor is expected to use less power than Intel's current offerings, making it more competitive with chips from Via, according to an unconfirmed report from Ars Technica. At the same time, Intel says the Stealey -- despite running at a lower clock speed -- will outperform Via's best.

Inscenic Releases Two Windows Mobile Games as Freeware

Inscenic, a company with a long history of developing games for mobile devices, has released two of its titles as freeware. Galaxy Gate and Retro Detonation are now freely available for Pocket PC users to download.

Galaxy Gate is a puzzle game with more than 30 different levels, while Retro Detonation is in the pattern of arcade classics of the past.
