Palm Bringing Out Wireless Backup Service

Palm, Inc. is in the process of bringing out a service that can wirelessly back up much of the data stored on one of its Palm OS-based smartphones.

The new service promises to automatically save a copy of the user's data to a secure server on a regular basis, and restore this information if necessary, without the need for the device to be physically connected to a PC.

There are certain limitations to it at this point. Data backup is currently on done on Contacts, Calendar, Memos, Tasks, bookmarks, speed dials, and the call log.

If the user is already backing their information up on a Microsoft Exchange Server then Palm's new service doesn't make a second backup of Calendar and Contact information.

In addition, the service is currently in beta, and, as Palm points out, "your data may be lost, may not be recoverable, and Palm may not be able to migrate your user data to the commercial service at the conclusion of the beta development stage. "

Pricing and Availability

Devices that can suport this service include the Treo 700p, Treo 680, or Treo 650 with approximately 2 MB of available RAM.

It is avalable now without a fee, but Palm warns that this is only temporary.
