No Windows Mobile 6 Upgrades for Any Current iPAQ

HP has revealed its plans for introducing Windows Mobile 6 upgrades for its current models that are running the previous version of this operating system. This can be summed up with one sentence: No upgrades for you!

The company told CNET that there will be no OS upgrades released for any of its iPAQ models, even its most recent ones, the iPAQ hw6900 and rw6800 series of smartphones, and the iPAQ rx5000 and rx4000 GPS-enabled handhelds.

HP made this decision because it was worried about "the potential for long delays, as well as possible carry-over costs".

These devices will continue to be sold with Windows Mobile 5.

Coming to One iPAQ

This announcement means that the only HP model that will definitely be running Windows Mobile 6 is the upcoming HP iPAQ 510.

Unlike previous cellular-wireless iPAQs, the 510 will have a numberpad, not a built-in keyboard. It also won't have a touchscreen. However, its QVGA screen will have a higher resolution that current cellular-wireless devices from this company, like the hw6900 series.

The 510 will run Windows Mobile 6 Standard on a 200 MHz TI OMAP processor. This smartphone will include 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM.

It is not yet available, and there's no word on a release date.
