Microsoft Promises 20 New Windows Mobile 6 Models by Year's End

A Microsoft spokesperson says that companies around the world will launch 20 more devices running Windows Mobile 6 before the end of this year.

This new operating system for smartphones and handhelds debuted earlier this year, but so far few devices running it have reached customer's hands, mostly because carriers put new smartphones through an extensive and lengthy testing process before releasing them.

This will change soon, according to Eddie Wu, the managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices, Asia. He told DigiTimes that 20 new models running Windows Mobile 6 will be introduced by a variety of companies before the close of 2007.

The list of those expected to launch these new devices includes HP, Samsung, ASUS, and more.

Growth Ahead

In addition, Wu predicted that Microsoft will double its share of the world mobile device market next year.

If he's correct, there will be 20 million Windows Mobile devices shipped in 2008, giving Microsoft 20% of the global market.
