Samsung has just announced that it has developed an 8 GB microSD memory card, a milestone in increasing the capacity of this tiny data storage format.

Samsung 8 GB microSD CardThis card, when available, will significantly increase the storage capacity of many future smartphones. It is capable of holding 2,000 MP3 music files; 4,000 digital photos; or approximately 5 DVD-quality movies.

Curiously, the company never makes it clear whether this card will use the SDHC format. The original SD format tops out at 2 GB, so Samsung's upcoming 8 GB should use the new format, but the company's announcement says nothing about that.

Samsung also doesn't say when this product will be commercially available, or what it will cost.
