High Capacity SD Card Support Added to Sprint Treo 700p

Palm, Inc. has just released a system software update for the Sprint version of the Treo 700p. This offers a long list of improvements to this smartphone, especially in the area of Bluetooth networking.

In addition, Palm has added SDHC support to this model, allowing it to use much higher capacity memory cards.

A version of this update for Verizon's Treo 700p is still in development.

Many Improvements

Palm has a long list of changes and improvement in this ROM update:

• Increased expansion card support, including 4 GB SD cards and SDHC cards
• Performance improvements to phone application
• Performance improvement to minimize delays experienced when loading the Blazer web browser
• System improvements to minimize skipping during music playback and eliminate audio delays experienced on some games
• Support for new daylight savings time rules, plus a simplified Date/Time preference panel
• Resolution of certain "wake up" issues that may occur with certain third party push email solutions
• Improved handling of SMS messages to lessen stalling of messages.
• For customers using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with SP 2 and above, an update to VersaMail now includes an update to Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync which adds Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology for push email, calendar and contacts. Also adding other EAS functionality such as remote wipe, policy support, and global address lookup

Bluetooth wireless enhancements:

• Improves overall user experience with supported Bluetooth wireless carkits and headsets (e.g. allow user to manually connect / disconnect to a Bluetooth device)
• Additional Bluetooth wireless functionality (e.g. audio routing to Bluetooth headset even when wired headset is plugged in)
• Increases list of supported/compatible Bluetooth wireless carkits, including BMW and Toyota/Lexus (Denso)

Sprint Treo 700p Update 1.10 can be download from Palm's support web site. It is available free of charge.

What About Other Carriers?

This version of the Treo 700p update is only for Sprint customers. It should not be installed by those using this smartphone with any other carriers.

Palm had originally hoped to get a Verizon version of this update out at the same time as the Sprint one, but obviously this didn't happen.

In a post on Palm's official blog, Paul Loeffler, the company's manager of public relations, said, "We don't have a specific date for when the 700p MR [maintenance release] will be available for Verizon Wireless users at this time." No reason was given for this delay.

According to Palm, the versions of this smartphone offered by other carriers such as Alltell do not need a version of this update.
