According to an unconfirmed report, Palm, Inc. has given pink slips to a significant percentage of the team working on adding Wi-Fi to its Treo smartphones.
This happened during a recent round of lay-offs at the company, but the report in Unstrung doesn't seem to be saying that these people were laid off because their jobs were eliminated. Instead, Palm now looking to hire replacements for them.
In addition, the head of the W-Fi development team was also supposedly cut.
Too Slow?
Palm has not commented on this report, so it is not known why such big changes were made to the group.
However, it could be related to the fact that Palm is lagging well behind its rivals in integrating Wi-Fi into its smartphones. This is rapidly becoming a standard feature in its competitor's products, while Palm has not yet released a single Treo with this short-range wireless networking standard.
