Apple May Launch Nano-ish iPhone Before Year's End

The iPhone has been a runaway success so far, but that hasn't kept some from criticizing it as too expensive and too big. If an unconfirmed report is correct, Apple is going to release later this year a version of this phone that will address both these issues.

Kevin Chang, an analyst for JP Morgan based in Taiwan, says people in Apple's supply chain leaked him some details on a less expensive iPhone -- possibly based on the iPod Nano -- that will be launched during the fourth quarter of this year.

This device will supposedly have fewer features than the current iPhone. The JP Morgan analysts says it will essentially be a Nano with phone features, eschewing the large screen and web browsing capabilities of its more-expensive sister model.

Chang predicts this model will sell for $300 or less. Because of its lower cost, he thinks it will out-sell the current iPhone.

If this information is correct, then this device will be available in the U.S. only from AT&T, as it has a 5-year exclusive contract with Apple to offer the iPhone and all follow-up models.
