Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade Imminent

Palm, Inc. is apparently set to release an operating system upgrade for the Treo 750 in the next few days.

An official email to attendees of Microsoft Australia’s TechEd conference says, "Palm and Microsoft will be announcing the availability of Windows Mobile 6.0 on the Palm Treo 750 Smartphone at Tech.Ed."

This conference kicks off on Monday, August 6.

When Palm and AT&T announced this spring that an operating system upgrade for the Treo 750 will be released, they also said that this will be available free of charge.

What's Going to Change?

Some of the improvements in Windows Mobile 6 include the ability to display HTML-formatted email, and improved versions of the Mobile Office applications, bringing them closer to their desktop equivalents.

In addition, Microsoft has fine tuned the look of the operating system.

Along with the other new features in Windows Mobile 6, the upgrade will bring an additional enhancement to the Treo 750: HSDPA support.

"Windows Mobile delivers to the small screen a rich and familiar experience that meets people's work and life needs while on the go ... all with a single device," said Chris Hill, group product manager, Microsoft "We are excited to work closely with Palm to offer a Windows Mobile 6 update to existing Treo 750 users so that they can take advantage of new and enhanced productivity and advanced communication capabilities."

What About Other Treos?

This development will certainly leave owners of other Windows Mobile-based Treos wondering if they'll be getting similar operating system upgrades.

Although Palm has not made an official statement on this issue, its complete silence on version of Windows Mobile 6 for the Treo 700w and 700wx is a strong indication that upgrades for these devices will not be released.
