The day when Sprint will launch its Mobile WiMax service is drawing closer, and this carrier has announced more details on its plans to roll out this high-speed wireless service.
Sprint will call this service XOHM (pronounced zoam), and will do a "soft" launch in Chicago and Baltimore/Washington before the end of 2007. However, the real introduction will take place in the first half of 2008.
By the end of next year, Sprint expects XOHM to be available to 70 million potential customers, and to grow that number to 125 million people by the end of 2010.
All of this won't come cheaply. This carrier says it expects to spend about $5 billion by the end of 2010 to get its WiMax service off the ground. At the same time, Sprint also expects to take in $2.5 billion from the service in 2010.
Fast, But How Fast?
Even though Sprint has been willing to give many details on its XOHM service, it still hasn't said exactly what data transfer speed users can expect. All that's known at this point is its supposed to be noticeably faster than this carrier's current EV-DO network in most situations.
This carrier said early this year that it expects to charge $55 per month for unlimited data transfers on this service.
