DIRECTV has released a beta of its DVR Scheduler software, which makes it easy to record programs when you can't actually be in front of your DVR. It happens to me at times. I'll be training for my next UFC fight only to remember that I forgot to set up my recording for Lifetime's movie of the week. Rather than miss it and try to catch the replay, or if I'm lucky, the Internet broadcast, I can now easily program my DVR from my mobile phone.
DIRECTV has a simple interface that can be reached via m.directv.com. Log into your account, and from there you can search for a program's name, or browse the listings for a specific channel. The interface is basic, but it gets the job done.
If you need to plan way out in advance, the guide contains 14 days worth of programming data. Select your program and the priority at which you wish to record and you're set. It took less than 20 seconds for the DVR record light to illuminate from when I submitted my request for a program currently running.
The only down side right now is that DIRECTV only supports its HD DVR, the HP20-700. Other models will be supported in February. If you have more than one supported DVR in your house, you can select which one you want to make the recording.
You have to give credit to DIRECTV for offering a new service at no cost. The service works well, there's really not much to complain about. So go ahead and add it to your mobile bookmarks and remember you can bail yourself out of DVR trouble at any time.
