Sony Ericsson Sold 100 Million Phones Last Year

Sony Ericsson has announced the results of its most recent financial quarter, but the big news was that the company passed a major milestone last year: 100 million handsets shipped.

The company estimates the total handset market in 2007 was over 1.1 billion units. If that is correct, then Sony Ericsson's market share grew around 2 percentage points last year, to reach slightly over 9% of the world market.

"Our target remains to become one of the top three players in the industry, and the momentum we established in 2006 and 2007 makes this a realistic and achievable ambition," said Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson.

Last Quarter's Results

During the last three months, Sony Ericsson shipped 30.8 million devices, an 18% increase over the same period last year.

Sales for the quarter were Euro 3.8 billion, roughly in line with the same quarter a year ago. The company is currently pursuing a strategy of offering a greater proportion of lower priced handsets.

Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 501 million, also  in line with a year ago. Net income for the quarter was Euro 373 million.

During this quarter, Miles Flint stepped down as Sony Ericsson's president, and Hideki ‘Dick' Komiyama joined the company to replace him. Komiyama previously had been the head of Sony Electronics, USA.
