There's good news and bad news for those interested in this device. The good news is that the Centro will cost just $100 with a 2-year service agreement and mail-in rebate.
The bad news is that it won't be able to access AT&T's 3G wireless network. Because of a limitation in the Palm OS, the 2.5G standard EDGE will be as good as it gets.
Nevertheless, the Centro will still be able to access many of AT&T's extra features, like XM Radio Mobile, Push To Talk, MobiTV, and MusicID.
An Overview of the Palm Centro
The Centro is one of the smallest and lightest smartphones Palm has ever offered. Nevertheless, it still includes a full QWERTY keyboard and a 320 by 320 pixel touchscreen.
It is 10.7 cm tall, 5.4 cm wide, and 1.8 cm thick; it weighs 119 g.
This model has a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 MP camera.
Available Now
To order the Centro, visit either the AT&T or Palm web site. It can also be found in AT&T's retail stores.
Unlimited email and data access is available for $30 a month with AT&T's PDA Personal data package with a corresponding voice plan.
At launch, this smartphone comes in only one color: "glacier white" with green keypad accents. However, in approximately one month, AT&T will debut a second color: "obsidian black".
Alternate Options
The Palm Centro is also available from Sprint, and this version includes the 3G standard EV-DO and a selection of colors. Like AT&T's version, this sells for $100 with a new two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.
This smartphone can also be pre-ordered directly from Palm Europe for €300 or £200.
