Nokia Officially Announces WiMAX-Equipped Internet Tablet *Updated*

Nokia has unveiled a version of its popular Internet Tablet devices that supports the new WiMAX networks expected to launch later this year.

Known as the N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition, the new device is nearly identical to the older N810, featuring internal GPS, 2 GB of memory, a 4.1 inch, WVGA screen, and microSDHC slot for memory expansion.

No pricing data was available, and the company would only describe the U.S. availability as being "summer of 2008 in areas where WiMAX connectivity is available."

The new Internet Tablet will also ship with several OS updates, including an improved email client. This  update will also be available free of charge to existing N800 and N810 owners in the second quarter.

Partnership With Sprint Likely

Although the press release mentions no carrier by name, Sprint is the only major US company with plans to have a WiMAX network up and running by summer, making it the most likely service provider for the N810 WE.

UPDATE: In a press event at CTIA, Nokia has emphasized that the N810 WiMAX Edition will specifically support Sprint's XOHM WiMAX service, and will be available in stores in areas where that service is available, or through Nokia's direct sales.

The company declined to state a specific price, but said that pricing would be "similar" to the current N810 Internet Tablet.
