AT&T Introduces BlackBerry Pearl 8110 with GPS

AT&T has just launched the BlackBerry Pearl 8110, a 2.5G smartphone that includes built-in global positioning system (GPS) support.

Combined with applications such as AT&T Navigator, this device offers turn-by-turn voice and on-screen directions with 3D maps that can be used in vehicles or while walking. AT&T Navigator also alerts users through voice and on-screen prompts to traffic slowdowns and incidents along their  route, and gives the option to choose an alternative route.

An Overview of the BlackBerry Pearl 8110

Like all the models in the Pearl series, the 8110 is smaller than most of RIM's other products, and doesn't include a full QWERTY keyboard. Instead, it uses this company's SureType system, in which each key handles two letters.

Naturally, it offers the features people have become accustomed to from previous BlackBerries, including support for RIM's push email system.

The 8110 does not support AT&T's high-speed 3G network. Instead, it uses the 2.5G standard EDGE. One of the main drawbacks of EDGE is that it does not allow for simultaneous voice and data connections. For those who need faster data transfers, this telecom recently introduced the Pearl 8120, another version of this smartphone that includes Wi-Fi instead of a GPS receiver.

It comes with an audio and video player for the 240 by 260 pixel display, a microSD/SDHC memory slot for additional storage of multimedia files, and a 3.5-mm stereo headset jack. Bluetooth 2.0 support allows it to work with stereo headsets, car kits, and other wireless accessories. It also has a 2-megapixel camera with video recorder.

This device measures 4.2 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.5 inches, weighs approximately 3.2 ounces. It comes with either a titanium or red finish.

Pricing and Availability

The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 is available now at AT&T retail stores nationwide, via att.com, and through AT&T's B2B sales channels 

The cost is $150, with a two-year contract, unlimited data plan and $40 a month voice plan.

Customers who want personal email access and Web browsing with the BlackBerry Internet Service can choose the BlackBerry Personal Unlimited data plan for $30 a month with a qualified voice contract. Unlimited corporate email and data access via BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional Software are available for $45 a month with a qualified voice plan.
