Quickoffice Commits to Office Suite for Android

To be taken seriously, every mobile platform needs a suite of applications to let users work with Microsoft Offices files, and those interested in Android won't have to be concerned that they'll be left out in the cold.

Quickoffice is available now for Palm OS, Symbian S60, and Symbian UIQ, and a version for Android is currently in development. Like the other versions, this will allow users to view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files.

Android is being assembled by a group of companies led by Google, so it's not surprising that the version of Quickoffice for this platform will be able to access files stored on Google Docs, in addition to ones stored on the device itself.

Its developer had a prototype to show off to PC Magazine, but there's no word on when the full version will be available. Of course, Android itself won't be available for some time; the first smartphones running this operating system aren't scheduled for release until late this year or early 2009.
