iPhone 2.0 Software Upgrade Makes an Early Appearance

Apple hasn't officially released the major system software upgrade for the original iPhone that it promised, but those eager to get their hands on it can do so now.

The most significant feature in this upgrade is the ability to run native third-party applications. These can be purchased from the iPhone App Store, which went live today.

iPhone Firmware 2.0 can be downloaded now from Apple's website (direct link).

The improved system software won't make the original iPhone equal to the iPhone 3G -- software can't add a GPS receiver and 3G cellular-wireless networking. Nevertheless, it is causing many users of the original version  to hold off buy the latest model, at least until after they have tried out the new software.

It's no longer possible to buy the first-generation iPhone new from carriers like AT&T, but a wave of used devices is likely to go on sale soon, as those who can't wait move to the iPhone 3G. This system software upgrade is likely to ensure that there are buyers for these units.
