Before any wireless device can be released in the United States, it has to get the approval of the FCC. The latest product to get this is a smartphone that has been in the news a great deal lately, the HTC Touch Diamond.

Specifically, the FCC has approved the CDMA version of this model, which means it is destined for Sprint, Verizon, or Alltel. Or it could be more than one, as unconfirmed reports have linked both Sprint and Verizon with this device.

The documents filed on this product can be found on the FCC website, but a confidentiality request from HTC means they contain very little of general interest.

What the Rumors Say

The first unconfirmed report that Sprint would be offering the Diamond surfaced back in springtime, and this was followed more recently by one that said both this smartphone and its sister model the HTC Touch Pro will be coming to Verizon.

A spy shot of this device with the Sprint logo appeared last week.

So far, however, the only N. American telecom to officially commit to the Diamond is Canada's Telus.

An Overview of the HTC Touch Diamond (CDMA)

The GSM version of this smartphone debuted last month, but the one for CDMA carriers will be slightly different.

All the versions will have a VGA display, a 3-megapixel camera, 4 GB of storage, GPS, and Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro.

The CDMA version, though, will have a slightly more curved casing than the GSM equivalent, and carriers will have the option to include a significantly larger battery: 1340 mAh vs. 900 mAh.

Both versions will have 3G, and the CDMA one will have EV-DO Rev. A. It will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
