In a recent interview, Michael Dell answered questions on his company's plans for smartphones and Mobile Internet Devices.
He didn't have good news for Axim fans eager for a Dell smartphone: "We are certainly looking at the whole smartphone category, but I wouldn’t expect anything anytime soon."
GigaOM attempted to get Dell to reveal whether any upcoming device would run Windows Mobile, Android, or even Symbian, but he didn't take the bait.
What about a MID?
Dell was slightly more forthcoming when asked about Mobile Internet Devices. "No question, this is a large and significant opportunity and it’s one — I think you will see Dell move in that direction. But I think it will be sequenced in the right order relative to all the opportunities we have."
At this point, Dell -- both the man and the company -- are still assessing what role MIDs will take on. Will they be notebook replacements or will they be notebook accessories?
Through all this, though, Dell made it clear that his company's primary focus will be on its core business: notebook and desktop computers.
