Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications has unveiled three flip model phones that use 2.7-inch e-Ink displays on their exterior. These screens convey the user's personal style as well as other information about the mobile device.
The models featuring the e-Ink technology will be available to Japanese customers later this summer. To date, there is no word of this technology making it to devices sold in the U.S.
More about e-Ink
e-Ink displays have several advantages over traditional displays: they don't require a backlight, for one, and therefore use much less power.
However, there are drawbacks, as well. They have a very slow refresh rate, so they aren't suitable for video. And developers are still working to add support for color.
