Nokia N85 Gets FCC Approval, U.S. 3G Compatibility

The N85 had previously been leaked as one of Nokia's upcoming Symbian S60 smartphones, and new information from the FCC shows that this device will not only be allowed to be sold in the U.S., but it will also pack compatibility with AT&T's 3G networks.

As noted on the FCC website, the N85 will have a quad-band GSM radio (850/900/1800/1900) with GPRS and EDGE capabilities. In addition, 3G compatibility will be handled by a 900/1900/2100 MHz WCDMA chip. This will enable AT&T customers to take advantage of HSDPA connectivity in supported markets.

T-Mobile 3G Support Possible

Earlier reports about the FCC displaying the testing documents for the N85 mentioned support for T-Mobile's 3G network, which is slated to be available nationwide in October.

T-Mobile's 3G network operates on a different frequency than AT&T's network and therefore the FCC has to test and approve any variations of the N85 that might include this wireless and hardware configuration.

More about the N85

The Nokia N85 will be a dual slider smartphone, similar to the N95 and N96 models. It will include Feature Pack 2 (version 3.2) of the Symbian S60 operating system.

On the hardware side, it will have a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and auto focus capability. A microSD card slot will enable the N85 to store and share those images.

In addition to the 3G connectivity, this smartphone will feature Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, and a built-in GPS receiver with Assisted-GPS support for faster location lock times.

Because of the GPS addition, it is expected that Nokia Maps will be included, possibly with a kind of trial offering before the subscription would need to be activated.

Availability

There has been no official mention from Nokia concerning the N85. However, FCC testing and certification usually means that a device is anywhere from a few weeks to a few months from being made available to consumer audiences.
