Archos Launching Line of Multimedia-Oriented MIDs

Archos has unveiled a line of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) with a strong emphasis on playing audio and video.

There are three models in this upcoming line, the Archos 5, the Archos 5G, and the Archos 7, with a range of screen sizes, storage capacities, and wireless capabilities.

All of these devices -- which Archos calls Internet Media Tablets -- will offer web browsing over Wi-Fi thanks to a version of Opera with Flash 9 support. Their email  client will support POP3, IMAP, and attachments.

They will also allow users to access nearly 1,000 Web TV channels, over 10,000 Web radio stations, and 100,000 podcasts. Plus with up to 320 GB of on-board storage, these MIDs will let users carry around  large amounts of video and music.

Three Models to Choose From

The Archos 5 will have a 4.8-inch, 800-by-480-pixel display. It will come in a range of hard drive sizes: 60 GB, 120 GB, and 250 GB. (See image at right)

The Archos 5G will add support for 3G cellular-wireless networking, allowing users to access the Internet wherever they go. It will include a 30 GB hard drive.

The Archos 7 will include a 7-inch, 800-by-480-pixel display. This device will sport either a 160 GB or 320 GB hard drive. (View image)

Pricing and Availability

These MIDs will be available from selected retailers and the Archos online store in the coming months.

The Archos 5 will hit the market in September and have a recommended retail price of £280 for the 60 GB version, £320 for the 120 GB version, and £360 for 250 GB version.

The Archos 5G will be released at some point during the fourth quarter of this year for £360.

The third model, the Archos 7 will be available in October. It will cost £360 for the 160 GB version and
£440 for the 320 GB version.
