Apple Releases Second-Generation iPod touch

Among the music-oriented products released at Apple's Let's Rock event was the second-generation iPod touch, sporting with new features and an updated operating system.

The new iPod touch, much like the new iPhone 3G, is only slightly redesigned from its predecessor, however it has gained some additional buttons and enhanced software.

In a move that seems to address one of the main issues with the first generation iPod Touch, the new version has volume up/down buttons, in addition to the already present 'home' button.

The new iPod touch also features a more tapered design than the previous version, also following in the steps of the iPhone. However, this new version of the iPod touch does not change in depth or height from the previous version.

Other additions to the iPod touch include:

• The inclusion of iPhone 2.1 software, which features application stability and wireless refinements
• 'Genius ' feature added that will make music recommendations based on what is playing, and also links to the iTunes store so that the song can be purchased right from the iPod touch
• Integration with the Nike + iPod sensor and application allowing iPod touch users to use the custom Nike + iPod application to tune and record workouts on the device
• Speaker for listening to music without headphones
• Longer battery life through optimizations in the software and hardware design
• Compatibility with the new iPod in-ear headphones and their microphone/volume controls

Updated Software for Previous iPod touch Users

Previous iPod touch users were not totally neglected with the announcement of the new iPod touch. Generation 1 iPod touch owners can download the latest operating system update as soon as Friday. It will require an update to iTunes version 7.7.1.

Like the previous update, this one will have a fee attached, but only for those updating from version 1.0. It will be $9.99 to update in that case.

For those already running version 2.0 of the iPod touch operating system, the update to version 2.1 will be free.

Availability

The second generation iPod touch is available now in 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB capacities. The costs for these are $230, $300, and $400 respectively. They are available now from the Apple online store and most Apple retailers.

Version 2.1 of the iPod touch operating system will be made available Friday. Current iPod touch users may get a prompt saying that there is an update to QuickTime that will be needed before performing the update.
