Asus Adding 3G to Eee PC Line

Asus has announced plans to bring support for 3G cellular-wireless networking to its Eee PC line of subnotebooks.

Specifically the company plans to add UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA to its relatively low-cost laptop, which currently depends on Wi-Fi for wireless data access.

"No longer bound to Internet hotspots, Eee PC users will be able to enjoy low latency mobile broadband Internet access at high downlink and uplink speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and 2 Mbps respectively, regardless of where they are—ensuring a seamless connected experience on the go," Asus said in a statement.

This feature will be added to the Eee PC 901 model; while otherwise this device will remain largely unchanged. This version will, however, include a higher-capacity solid-state hard drive: 20 GB vs. 16 GB in the current one.

The first 3G-enhanced subnotebooks from Asus will debut next month.
