SanDisk has just announced it will bring its 16 GB microSDHC card to market next month. At launch, this will be the highest capacity microSD card available.
A large number of smartphones have microSD card slots, and adapters are available for those with miniSD and regular SD slots.
SanDisk will also release a 16 GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card at the same time.
"Flash memory cards have increased in storage capacity, but even an 8 GB card may be too small for anyone with GPS map data, a few movies, a game or two, a presentation file, and other applications. There is an acute need for more mobile storage capacity. 16 GB gives consumers the ability to carry their digital content with them and still have room to do more with their mobile phones," said Avi Greengart, Research Director for Mobile Devices at Current Analysis.
Pricing and Availability
SanDisk's 16 GB microSDHC card will have a suggested price of $100, while the M2 version will sell for $120.
For the rest of this year, they will be available from only two stores; Best Buy Mobile stores will start carrying them in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November.
