Although Nokia intends to keep offering business-oriented smartphones, it is going to stop developing its own backend products for the enterprise. Instead, the company is going to put more of its focus on consumer-oriented services.
Nokia announced yesterday that it plans to cease developing or marketing its own behind-the-firewall business mobility solutions. Going forward, the company's enterprise solutions will be made by combining Nokia devices and applications with software solutions from vendors such as Microsoft, IBM, Cisco and others.
"The initial success of the Nokia E71 with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is a great example of the attractiveness of our new approach," said Niklas Savander, EVP, Services & Software, Nokia.
The company is in the advanced stages of discussions for the sale of its security appliances business to a financial investor.
Less Business, More Consumer
The technologies and expertise from Nokia's business-oriented products will be reallocated to its new consumer push email service.
"We will continue with our investment strategy to develop key consumer Internet services in areas such as music, games, media, messaging, and context-based services," said Savander.
In recent months, Nokia has launches a new family of online mobile services. Ovi -- which is Finnish for "Door" -- is the gateway to all the services Savander is referring to. Its N-Gage gaming service is a part of Ovi, as well.
