If an unconfirmed report is correct, Verizon Wireless will release a version of the Apple iPhone in 2009.
Verizon and Apple are supposedly expecting to conclude negotiations before the end of this year, and an announcement could come at the Macworld tradeshow in January, according to 9to5Mac.
The source for this, a "Verizon insider", did not give any additional details, aside from saying the device will support Verizon's high-speed EV-DO network.
Evidence For and Against
Aside from the tip, the major evidence to support this rumor is several postings on Apple's job site looking for engineers with experience in CDMA and EV-DO. The current version of the iPhone works only on GSM networks, while Verizon is a CDMA-based carrier.
On the other side of the coin, AT&T has an exclusive contract to offer the iPhone in the U.S. Exactly how long this will last isn't public knowledge, but reliable reports indicate that it was recently been renewed through at least 2010.
