HTC May Be Bringing Out Its First Smartphone with WiMAX

Sprint's XOHM service is starting to roll out, but so far this WiMAX service is only usable with laptops and other PCs. Many are wondering where the WiMAX-enabled smartphones are.

According to several sources online, HTC is working on just the sort of thing these people are looking for: a Windows Mobile device with this 4G service.

As the HTC Quartz will have a 3.8-inch, WVGA (800 by 480 pixel) touchscreen, some might consider it a Mobile Internet Device (MID) instead of a smartphone. Still, it will have GSM capabilities, so it will be usable as a phone.

And this model won't stop there, it will also reportedly include the 3G standard HSPA, Wi Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0.

If the early, unconfirmed information is correct, the Quartz will be fairly loaded with features.

This device will reportedly run Windows Mobile and HTC/s TouchFLO interface on a 528 MHz processor. It will have either 256 MB or 128 MB of RAM, 512 MB of ROM, and a microSD/SDHC card slot.

Other items on the leaked feature list include a GPS receiver,  TV-Out port, 5 MPx camera, accelerometer, and even an IrDA port.

At this point, it appears that the Quartz will soon be launched by the Russian wireless provider Yota as the HTC T8290. There is no word yet on availability in any other areas, though.
