HP Unveils Two iPAQ Smartphones

HP has just taken the wraps off two new smartphones: the iPAQ Data Messenger and the iPAQ Voice Messenger.

Both devices will have much in common. Just for starters, they will both have keyboards, QVGA screens, and plenty of wireless capabilities.

But there will be some major differences, too. Although they will both run Windows Mobile 6.1, they will use different editions. The Data Messenger will use the Professional Edition -- meant for devices with touchscreens, while the Voice Messenger will use the Standard Edition, as it does not include a touchscreen.

In addition, their keyboards will be in different places. The Voice Messenger will have a small keyboard on its front, just below the display, which will be used in portrait mode. The Data Messenger will include a larger keyboard, meant to be used in landscape mode, that will slide out from behind the touchscreen.

Also, the Data Messenger will have a larger display: 2.8 inches vs. 2.4 inches.

Internal Similarities

Internally, these iPAQs will numerous similarities.

In the wireless department, both will be quad-band GSM phones (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) with tri-band 7.2Mbps HSDPA (900/1900/2100 MHz), Wi-Fi b/g, and Bluetooth 2.0.

They will have GPS, 3.1 megapixel cameras, and microSD card slots.

Despite their different operating systems, they will have the same amounts of RAM and ROM: 128 MB and 256 MB, respectively.

Coming Next Month

Both these smartphones are going to debut on Vodafone some time next month. Those in the U.K. will pay £399 for the Data Messenger or £333 for the Voice Messenger without a contract.

There is no word yet on when these models will be released in other countries.
