Developer Sets Out to Create Palm OS-Compatible Operating System

Dmitry Grinberg, a software developer who has gained notoriety for several well-known applications developed for the Palm OS, is setting out to build a new operating system called DGOS which will run on Palm hardware and also be compatible with current Palm OS software.

Grinberg announced the project much as he had previous ones: with a simple forum mention. Details noted in that thread include that it will not be an open source operating system, and that compatibility will be employed using the same reverse-engineering actions that many emulators use.

DGOS will have its own kernel, designed for ARM processors, and contain features such as multitasking and protected memory.

It will use some of his better-known applications for its major components, such as skinUI.

"DGOS is my own kernel, from the ground up. It takes all the bad parts of the Palm OS kernel, all the bad parts of Linux, and avoids all of them," said Grinberg.

Details Still Sketchy

At this time, it is not known the development schedule, or what software will be included within operating system. Palm users are familiar with Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos, multimedia players, and several types of third-party software, though nothing from Grinberg has confirmed if these utilities, or even a web browser, will be included.

It is not even certain if this project will be widely available, as Grinberg has not officially revealed if it will be a publicly available application.

A Strong Pedigree

Previous Palm OS software developed by Grinberg includes PowerSDHC (an SD to SDHC utility), DynaClock (a dynamic CPU over/underclocking utility), PowerDiGi (a digitizer fix utility), and PowerDrive (a LifeDrive-related utility).
