Verizon Will Require $30 Data Plan with All Smartphones

Verizon Wireless is reportedly going to begin requiring its customers to sign up for a data plan when they buy a smartphone.

A document describing this new plan has leaked out of Verizon. According to it, smartphone that launch after Nov. 14 will have to be sold with a data plan of $30 or more. Customers won't have the option of signing up for pay-as-you-go plans, or Verizon's $25 for 10 MB per month plan.

This includes all BlackBerry, Palm OS, and Windows Mobile models, and also unnamed "Mobile Web 2.0" devices.

This does not affect Verizon customers who already have a smartphone. They will be able to continue with their current plan. This will change when they want to upgrade devices, though.
