Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, was speaking at a conference last week when he -- possibly accidentally -- made reference to an unannounced upcoming version of Windows Mobile.
Ballmer said:
"With releases we'll make this year -- releases we'll make with 6.5 next year, Windows Mobile 7, I think we have a pretty interesting roadmap."
This isn't the first time a high-level executive has mentioned Windows Mobile 6.5. Sanjay Jha, the head of Motorola's mobile device division, brought it up at a conference last month.
What Is Windows Mobile 6.5?
Previously the next known upgrade to Microsoft's mobile platform was Windows Mobile 7, a major overhaul which was has been repeatedly delayed, most recently until the second half of 2009.
While no other information about Windows Mobile 6.5 has been forthcoming, the version number suggest that while not a full retooling, this new version may be a more significant upgrade than the current Windows Mobile 6.1 represented.
