Nokia is taking an aggressive step into the U.S. market with a new agreement with T-Mobile. Some Best Buy stores have begun selling unlocked Nokia smartphones on contract with this wireless carrier.
Because these devices are being sold with a service contract, they are being offered with a subsidy, knocking $200 to $300 off the price of the unlocked/non-carrier variants. And unlike other Nokia's models have been released by a U.S. carrier, these carry no carrier restrictions or branding.
The models that can be seen at Best Buy include the Nokia N96 NAM (North American Edition), Nokia N78 NAM, and Nokia E71 NAM. The N96 is $600, down from $900, while the E71 is $200, down from $460.
It is not known at this time if more devices will become available, if this is just a holiday precursor by Best Buy and Nokia, or the sign of things to come from both companies. What is known is that U.S. mobile phone buyers now have -- at more accessible prices -- some of the most powerful smartphones available.
