It may be impossible to take the T-Mobile G1 outside of the United States without incurring roaming charges.
One of the first people to take this new Android-powered smartphone out of the U.S. has been charged for using data, even if all data services are turned off.
A G1 user told Gizmodo that despite turning off data roaming, data synchronization, and 3G service, a trip to the U.K. resulted in a charge of $102.85 for international data roaming. When he called T-Mobile to complain, he was told that he should not have taken the phone out of the U.S.
A T-Mobile spokesperson, when asked about this issue, said that turning off data roaming on the G1 should prevent any data-related charges, but promised that her company is looking into this report.
