Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Others Get on the Android Bandwagon

A number of well-known companies have joined the Open Handset Alliance, the Google-led group responsible for the Android OS. Among the new members are Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Vodafone, Asus, Ericsson, and Garmin.

These companies will either deploy Android devices, contribute code to the Android Open Source Project, or produce products and services for Android-based devices.

Also joining the OHA today are AKM Semiconductor, ARM, Atheros Communications, Borqs, Huawei Technologies, Omron Software, Softbank Mobile Corporation, and Teleca AB.

They join TI, Sprint, T-Mobile, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and Wind River, who have been memers of the OHA since it debuted last year.

Android is a new consumer-oriented mobile operating system. It is strongly tied to Google's online services, like Gmail and Google maps.

The first device based on it, the T-Mobile G1, debuted in recent weeks in the U.S. and the U.K.
