A high-level Apple executive has stated something his company has only suggested in the past: the iPhone is a mobile gaming console.
John Geleynse, Apple's Director of Technology Evangelism, used part of his speech at a conference on Friday to compare the iPhone the the Nintendo DS, and said this smartphone is a "gaming console".
This shouldn't come as a surprise to most people, as many of the recent TV ads for the iPhone 3G and iPod touch -- the iPhone's phone-less little brother -- have emphasized their gaming capabilities.
Up Against Tough Competition
Apple is going to find some strong competitors in the mobile gaming market. At the top of the list is the DS, which Nintendo says made up 79% of all portable gaming hardware sales in November.
Still, in recent months there has been a surge of games released for the iPhone and iPod touch, with new titles announced daily. And Apple's Apps Store -- which allows users to find and purchase games right on the device -- is a strong advantage.
