AT&T Certifies the Palm Treo Pro

AT&T has added the Palm Treo Pro to its Specialty Vertical Device list, which means that it has certified that this smartphone is fully compatible with its 3G wireless network.

However, this does not mean that AT&T is adding the Treo Pro to the lineup of products it sells with a subsidy. Still, it is now available through AT&T Business Alliance Channels, including CDW, Insight, CNM Wireless, and VOX Mobile.

It's Still Unlocked

The Treo Pro is being offered by Vodafone in Europe, but so far none of the top U.S. mobile phone companies have picked it up. That's why Palm is selling it directly to consumers as an unlocked device which can be used on an GSM carrier's network.

As such, it doesn't need certification from AT&T, but this should reassure companies and individuals who are nervous about using unlocked phones.

Those who prefer their devices with subsidies can wait until late January, when Sprint is expected to launch the Treo Pro.

This smartphone has the design that's become a hallmark of the Treo line, a candybar shape with 320-by-320-pixel touchscreen above a QWERTY thumb-keyboard.

It runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional on a 400 MHz processor from Qualcomm, and comes with the standard suite of productivity applications.

The Pro is a quad-band GSM device with tri-band UMTS/HSDPA support, which means it can be used for both phone calls and 3G wireless access around the world. In addition, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Other features include an external microSD card slot for additional storage, a built-in GPS receiver, and a 2.0 MPx camera.
