Consumer Reports Makes Smartphone Recommendations

In its January issue, the U.S. magazine Consumer Reports has a list of its recommended smartphones. This will likely please some, but leave many others scratching their heads.

In compiling its rankings, the magazine put an emphasis on price and Microsoft Office support. It also appears to value devices with hardware keyboards. It doesn't appear to give much weight to highly-capable web browsers or 3G.

Consumer Reports' top 5 smartphones are:

1. Samsung BlackJack II
2. T-Mobile Wing
3. Motorola Q9c
4. T-Mobile Shadow
5. BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

Notably absent from even the top 10 is Apple's iPhone 3G, which came in at 11 for its weak support for working with Microsoft Office files. The T-Mobile G1, the first model running Android, was 12th in the rankings for its lack of support for Microsoft Exchange synchronization.
