Sony Ericsson is in the process of rolling out its first Windows Mobile smartphone -- the Xperia X1. This model is being manufactured by HTC, but the X1 will reportedly be the only one in this series that will be handled by HTC.
Sony Ericsson is committed to making follow-up models, but future Windows Mobile devices from this company will be manufactured by Mobinnova, a subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics, according to Chinese-language Commercial Times., who cites unnamed industry sources.
Why?
Why this change is being made is unknown, but there are a couple of possibilities.
The Xperia X1 ran into production problems that are still delaying its wide-spread distribution. Sony Ericsson may be blaming HTC for this, and decided to go with one its rivals for future models.
Another possibility stems from the fact that HTC offers its own line of Windows Mobile devices, while Foxconn/Mobinnova does not. Sony Ericsson may have been uncomfortable having one of its top competitors produce its products.
Or it could be something as simple as Mobinnova offered a significantly better price to produce the products.
