Nokia has discontinued the N810 WiMax Edition of its Internet Tablet series.

Is It WiMax's Fault?

One possibility to the discontinuing of the N810 WiMax Edition could be due to the WiMax network itself.

In the U.S. there have been delays building the network -- so far, only two US cities have official deployments, Baltimore and Portland. This puts a strain on companies such as Nokia who have the devices, but very few places to sell them.

WiMax has also seen criticism in that the switches used to power the access points are not optimized for mobile device use, and in some cases would use a different frequency entirely.

It is not known for sure if these issues might have contributed to Nokia's decision to pull out of this promising wireless technology, but it's possible that they (and current economic conditions) might have played a part.

More about the N810 WiMax Edition

The N810 WiMax Edition is a variant of the third generation of Nokia's Internet Tablet devices. It only differs from the original N810 in that it offers a different color scheme and the WiMax capabilities.

This device features an 800x480 pixel touchscreen, sliding keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. It can accept miniSD cards to expand the built-in memory capacity, which sits at 2 GB.

The N810 WiMax Edition uses a version of the Linux operating system called Maemo. It also comes with a web browser based on Firefox called MicroB.

Future Support

The N810 WiMax Edition may not receive any more official support from Nokia, but the Maemo Linux community has been known to continue to release tweaked versions of the operating system which offer some fixes and updates for previous devices.

Remaining in the Nokia N-series Internet Tablet line up are the N810 and N800 Internet Tablets.
