Following the major update of the E71 a few weeks ago, there are new updates for the Nokia N82 and N78 models.
The N78
The N78 has been bumped up to v20.149.051.1. Much like the update to the E71, this is a pretty major update featuring several improvements to system stability, updated Nokia Maps to version 2, the addition of an Application Update feature to the Applications folder, and tweaks to device performance with applications and the navi-wheel.
The N82
The N82 has been updated to v31.0.016. This is very similar to the one that the Euro version of the N95 received earlier this month. The N82 is getting system stability improvements, the closing of some security holes, and better performance across the entire device.
Unlike the N78 update, the N82 update has been only confirmed for some models. Many users have reported on issues with some third-party software, so it might be that this update is still in the process of having some issues ironed out.
How to Update
Both the N78 and N82 can be updated by connecting the devices to a Windows XP or Vista PC, then running the Nokia Software Updater program. Because both updates are major, it is recommended to backup all phone data to a memory card and/or the PC before proceeding.
The N78 also features the ability to be updated over-the-air (OTA). By dialing #0000# from the Active Standby screen, there is an options menu that would enable the ability to check for updates, and then install them right to the device. In this case, no previous personal data is removed from the device, only the updates are added.
Availability
Both the N78 and N82 are available worldwide. The N78 comes in a European 3G and North American 3G version, while the N82 is only available in a European 3G version -- though it will still work in North America, 3G capability is limited to EDGE.
