Nokia announced last month that it is bringing the E63 QWERTY smartphone to North America. Today, this model launched in Nokia's own U.S. flagship stores at a surprisingly low price.
This version is made with N. American 3G frequencies, but is not being sold through a wireless carrier. Instead, it is being sold unlocked and is therefore able to work with AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers or other GSM carriers.
Many unlocked smartphones are priced out of the range of the average purchasers, but the Nokia E63 sells for just $280.
More about the Nokia E63 NAM
The E63 is a similar model to Nokia's popular E71, but has some differences in keyboard design, body thickness, and 3G support -- the E63 offers 3G but not the HSDPA standard which speeds up downloads.
This smartphone includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and GPS/A-GPS as wireless connectivity options.
A 2-MPx camera, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, and support for 16 GB microSDHC memory cards are also standard features.
On the software side, it runs the Symbian S60 Feature Pack 1 (v3.1) operating system. Support for Nokia's Mail for Exchange out of the box brings Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync compatibility, which includes email, calendar, contacts, and tasks sync, plus global address book lookup. Nokia's online files service called Files on Ovi is also be included, offering 1 GB of space for free.
More information is available on Nokia USA's web site.
Availability
The Nokia E63 NAM (N. American Model) comes in ruby red or ultramarine blue, and can purchased unlocked through Nokia Flagship Stores in New York and Chicago. It will soon be available from a number of independent retailers and e-tailers.
The standard version of this device is also being sold by some grey retailers in the U.S., but this lacks N. American 3G.
