With a name like UltraTOUCH, there can be little doubt what feature will be the focus of the latest Samsung high-end phone to be unveiled. Unlike many touchscreen-oriented models, though, it will also including a sliding hardware numberpad.
Plus, this 2.8-inch display won't be a regular LCD, but an Active-OLED display, providing crisper color while using less power. It will also offer haptic feedback.
Because they need room for their sliding keypads, devices with this design are often thick, but the UltraTOUCH will be just 12.7 mm.
A Focus on Multimedia
Samsung has been pushing up the capabilities of the cameras built into its smartphones recently, and the 8 MPx one that will be part of this model is a good example. In addition to its high resolution, it will also offer a dual power LED flash, face detection, smile detection. It will be capable of recording VGA video at 30 fps.
In addition to its audio and video player, the UltraTOUCH will have an FM radio.
Even the user interface will be graphically oriented; it will use Samsung's finger-friendly TouchWiz on top of a proprietary OS. This will make this device consumer friendly, but much less usable for business than the Samsung Omnia, which uses TouchWiz on top of Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS.
Other High-End Features
The Samsung UltraTOUCH S8300 will be a GSM phone with support for HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, a very high-speed version of 3G cellular-wireless networking.
It will have a GPS receiver, and support for geo-tagging images.
This high-end device will also have Bluetooth and 80 MB of built-in storage, or a microSD card slot will offer up to 16 GB of additional capacity.
Overall, it will be 110 mm by 51.5 mm by 12.7 mm.
More information on the Samsung UltraTOUCH S8300 will be revealed at the Mobile World Congress tradeshow which starts next week.
